Electric Pickup Trucks

Is the Market Ready for Electric Pickup Trucks? GM Thinks It Will Be Soon Enough

Until recently, the electric vehicle (EV) market has consisted primarily of compact/mid-size hatchbacks and expensive luxury sedans. These models have typically been sold to eco-conscious drivers who can afford to help the environment (and save on fuel) by paying the high price tag upfront. However, EVs are becoming more affordable, and now we are seeing electric sport-utility vehicles entering the EV market, including hybrids and some that are completely battery-powered. Isn’t it only natural, then, that the pickup truck will be the next type of vehicle to be introduced to the EV market? Yes, and a few of America’s leading automobile manufacturers are making their push to establish themselves early on in the game. The General Motors Electric Pickup Truck While there is still limited information available about GM’s future EV pickup, we do know that it’s in the works. GM’s chief executive Marry Barra said earlier this year that the company is developing a full-size electric pickup with Josh Tavel at the helm. Tavel was chief engineer for GM’s full-size pickups, along with several of their EVs, including the Cadillac ELR and Chevrolet’s Volt, Spark and Bolt models. GM’s plans for an electric pickup are part of an overarching plan to offer consumers a full range of EVs sometime in the future. According to her, GM won’t be losing its place as an industry-leading truck and EV manufacturer. The company has stated that the EV pickup will be built on GM’s global EV platform (BEV3). This third-generation platform is expected to be the foundation of most GM EVs for many years to come. It’s not clear whether GM will electrify a current pickup model or design an all-new model. However, the company has suggested that their EV pickup will be released by early 2022, and many in the industry speculate that offering an electric version of the Chevrolet Silverado or GMC Sierra would make the most sense. Other EV Trucks In recent years, Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, has expressed his intentions to create a Tesla electric pickup and surpass industry-leading automakers like GM and Ford. With the Ford F-Series and Chevrolet Silverado consistently being the top-selling vehicles in the U.S., Musk undoubtedly realizes this is a tall order. Nonetheless, his plan to develop a “cyberpunk” pickup that performs like a Porsche 911 has sparked a fire in the industry and has ultimately caused Ford and GM to accelerate their EV pickup development. It appears that EV startup Rivian will be among the first to release an electric pickup on the market. The luxury R1T is due to release by the Fall of 2020. The pickup is being built on Rivian’s skateboard chassis, which places the drive train, battery, and suspension under the vehicle. This significantly improves the vehicle’s center of gravity and provides more space for storage in other parts of the vehicle. A similar chassis is expected to be used on all upcoming EV pickups. The Future of the Pickup While it may still be many years before it’s a reality, developments by companies like Tesla and Rivian, as well as commitments by GM and Ford to step up to the plate, paint quite a vivid picture of an all-electric future. It will likely take some time to convince most pickup aficionados to give up their trucks powered by internal combustion engines. Even if gas prices were to skyrocket, the practicality of charging and holding a charge on an electric pickup has yet to be realized. And this is a critical factor, especially for pickup drivers in rural areas where driving an above-average number of miles each day is the norm, and where charging stations are seldom available. Nonetheless, Rivian claims that the upcoming R1T—starting at $69,000—will have options for a 105 kWh, 135 kWh, and 180 kWh lithium-ion battery pack good for 230, 300 and 400 miles, respectively. Likewise, Musk has declared that Tesla's EV pickup ($49,000) will provide 400 to 500 miles of range per charge. If these promises come to fruition, it could be a game changer for the entire pickup truck industry.   It’s never been easier to imagine an all-electric future. For fans of GM, you will likely get your first look at a GM electric pickup within the next few years. Developments by the likes of GM, Tesla, Rivian, and Ford appear to be turning the entire industry on its head. As of now, the question is not so much if an all-electric future is possible, but rather when it will become the reality.

Leasing vs. Buying

Leasing vs. Buying a Car: Pros, Cons, and Tips for Getting Your Next Ride

Are you in the market for a new vehicle? Chances are you’ve heard about leasing a car, which has become the mainstream alternative to purchasing a car. Generally speaking, using a conventional car loan to buy a car means that you borrow from a lender and make monthly payments each month for a certain number of years. Most of each payment goes toward the principal as you build equity, while a remaining portion is reserved for interest. You technically own the car, and you can make any modifications to it that you wish. Once the principal is paid down and your equity is built, you own the car free and clear—meaning your debt to the lender is fulfilled. When you lease a car, you basically pay the value that the car depreciates, which means your monthly payments are cheaper. However, you never own the car unless you agree to buy it at the end of the lease, which means there are restrictions and potential fees associated with driving the car. Leasing is becoming increasingly popular among Americans, and in 2018, about 30% of consumers opted to lease a car rather than buy one. Just like renting or purchasing a home, there are advantages and disadvantages either way you go. LEASING—PROS AND CONS So, let’s start with the pros and cons involved with leasing a vehicle: Pros of Leasing When it comes to upfront costs, leasing a car is significantly less expensive. Since you’re not paying on any principal, the monthly payments are lower than if you were paying a lending company. You’re basically borrowing the car, and whatever value the car depreciates while you drive it is what you pay each month (in addition to finance charges). Lower payments provide the opportunity to drive a newer, nicer vehicle, and driving newer vehicles usually means you will experience less car trouble. Also, since you’re always driving a newer vehicle, it’s likely you will qualify for free maintenance and oil changes under the manufacturer’s warranty. There are also conveniences with leasing a car. For instance, you don’t have to concern yourself with the vehicle’s trade-in value, especially if you don’t plan on buying it from the dealer after the lease is through. And when the time comes, you don’t have to worry about selling the vehicle, which can be a laborious process. When the lease ends, you simply leave the vehicle with the dealer. Moreover, there may be tax benefits to leasing a car, particularly if you are self-employed or you own a business. Cons of Leasing You may see now why leasing is appealing to so many people. However, there are plenty of disadvantages that come with it as well. In the long run, you will probably end up paying more if you lease a car instead of buying one. This is mainly because vehicles depreciate at such a fast rate. Therefore, if you keep leasing car after car, your monthly payments never end and you never own a car. There are also restrictions and potential fees to consider when leasing. For example, lease contracts limit the number of miles you can put on the vehicle. Sure, you can go over that limit, but you will pay anywhere between 10 cents and 50 cents for every extra mile. And if you drive under your mileage limit, those miles don’t roll over. Furthermore, you can’t really make any modifications to a vehicle you lease. Some dealers will agree to professional window tinting and maybe a few other exceptions. For the most part, however, you’re expected to return the vehicle stock. Technically, you can make modifications as long as you undo them before bringing the vehicle back. But if you decide to remove that emblem or badge, and it leaves a blemish when you put it back on, you could face some hefty fees. Modifications aside, you have to return the vehicle in good condition. If the vehicle has excessive dings and scratches—anything beyond normal wear and tear—you can expect to pay additional fees. And those who decide to terminate their lease before the contract ends will face significant charges. The Bottom Line Leasing a car is cheaper up front, which means you can drive a more expensive car than you could otherwise afford. Also, leasing often comes with free maintenance, and it’s a fairly straightforward process—you use the car and bring it back, without having to worry about selling it. However, leasing costs more money long-term, and there are a lot of restrictions and fees to consider. BUYING — PROS AND CONS By now you probably have a decent idea of some of the pros and cons involved with buying a car, but let’s expand on them a little bit: Pros of Buying Over time, buying a car is a better investment because you’re paying to own the car. The longer you drive a vehicle after it’s paid off, the more value you get out of it. So, in the grand scheme of things, the least expensive way to drive a vehicle is to buy one and drive it until it quits. Also, when you buy a vehicle, there are no additional fees or penalties to worry about. You can make modifications to the vehicle, and you can drive it as much as you want. Plus, you always have the option of selling the car, or you can even trade it in to lower the price of your next car. Cons of Buying Though you’re working toward owning a car outright when you purchase it, you still have steeper monthly payments, since you’re paying both principal and interest. And in order to avoid owing more than the vehicle is worth (going upside down in the loan), your down payment will usually be significantly higher. Plus, a manufacturer warranty typically lasts about three years, and you are responsible for all repair and maintenance costs after that. Additionally, the flexibility to trade-in or sell your vehicle whenever you want is nice. However, neither of these is an easy task. Each is often a long, drawn-out process that can be stressful if not overwhelming. The Bottom Line If you’re focused on the long-term, buying a car is your best option. Not only is it cheaper, but you won’t have to deal with the restrictions and penalties that come with leasing a car. Also, you have the flexibility to trade-in or sell your vehicle whenever you want. However, your monthly payments will be higher, you’ll have to pay for maintenance and repairs, and trading-in or selling the vehicle is often tedious. WHY THE TIME OF YEAR MATTERS If you’re considering leasing a vehicle, it’s important to understand that when you lease the car can make a difference in how much you pay. Similar to purchasing a car, there are specific times of the year when you can get good deals on a lease. A lot of dealerships have targets and bonuses for making a certain number of sales by the end of each month and year. So, if you walk into a dealership at the end of the month, there’s a good chance that someone will lower the price to sell a lease in order to hit their target for the month. Your chances are even better if you go in for a lease as the year is coming to a close, because more employees are likely to be scrambling to hit a milestone so they can receive their year-end bonuses. Another common time of year to get good deals is during model changes. Manufacturers often release their new models in late summer or early fall, and if you’re fine with driving last year’s model, you may be able to get a great lease deal when the newer models hit the market. This is primarily because dealerships are eager to make room for the new models, meaning they are more likely to offer lease incentives on the older ones. Then there are the holiday sales, which you’ve probably seen advertised on TV. Particularly around Christmas, Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day, you can often score some deep discounts on a lease. However, be sure to look at the fine print, because these promotions often come with stipulations. Finally, you can also get lucky if a dealership is experiencing slow business or is having trouble selling a specific model. In sum, try to shop for a lease at the end of the month or year, during a holiday promotion, or when business appears to be slow. IF YOU DECIDE TO LEASE If leasing sounds like the right thing for your situation, make sure you understand how it works before you walk into the dealership. To gauge your probability of being approved for a lease, check your credit score with one of three major credit bureaus (Experian, TransUnion, Equifax). If you want to be extra thorough, get a report from all three, and make sure any inconsistencies are sorted out. Some leasing companies will only approve customers with a 700 or higher. Even if you get approved with a lower credit score, however, your interest rates are likely to be higher. Also, go through your budget to determine how much you can afford for monthly payments. Generally speaking, you never want your lease payment to exceed 15% of your monthly net pay. And you will also need to factor in costs like insurance and gas. IF YOU DECIDE TO BUY As with leasing a car, you will need to determine your budget before buying a car. Follow the 15% rule for your car loan, and be sure to consider additional costs like insurance, gas, sales tax, vehicle registration, routine maintenance, and unexpected repairs. Determine a number for how much you can spend on a vehicle, and consider purchasing one that’s a little less expensive than that number. Unless you know the exact model you want, research different vehicles to find a few that could meet your needs. Along with learning more information about models you’re interested in, you can look at MSRPs and see how much they’re going for at different dealerships. That way, you can estimate a fair price and set your limit on what you’re willing to spend when you’re negotiating with dealers. Once you’ve done your research, call a dealership to set up a test drive. Research is important, but actually getting behind the wheel is often what convinces a buyer whether that particular vehicle is the one or not. After a test drive, you’ll be ready to talk prices, start the trade-in/sale process of your current vehicle, close the deal, and drive off in your new ride! Leasing and buying a vehicle both have their pros and cons. If cheaper monthly payments and driving a new car every few years is the most important thing to you, then leasing is probably your best option. If you care more about making a long-term investment and having no monthly payments one day, then you’re likely better off to purchase a vehicle. Just make sure you understand the differences between leasing and buying a car, and either way, come up with a plan before you walk into the dealership. - Alex Watson

GMC Sierra 2500HD

Defy Convention with the 2020 GMC Sierra 2500HD

Are you in the market for a new heavy-duty truck? GMC has you covered from top to bottom with the new Sierra 2500HD. At first glance, the 2020 Sierra 2500HD—which is in its first year of a new body structure—is as impressive as they come. And once you get into the details of its capabilities and features, it doesn’t disappoint. In short, it’s powerful yet refined—sophisticated yet practical. This article will discuss the 2020 Sierra 2500HD’s remarkable towing performance, its beautiful and functional exterior and interior features, and the various trim levels and their pricing. THE TOWING Perhaps the most impressive aspect of the new Sierra 2500 HD is its towing capabilities. Let’s dive into the details: Trailering Capabilities The Sierra 2500HD can tow up to 30,000 pounds, which is quite a jump from the 2019 models of 23,300 lbs. It’s clear that GMC focused on attracting customers who are looking to pull a trailer. This is the first year that the automobile manufacturer has assigned the Sierra HD models its own chief engineer and development program; in times past, their development was seen simply as an extension of the Sierra 1500. Jaclyn McQuaid, the chief engineer, noted that trailering was the focal point in the Sierra HD’s design process, pointing out that the 2020 models have “a beefier driveline and suspension, a stiffer frame, larger axles and propshafts, and an enhanced cooling system.” In other words, it’s built to be a towing juggernaut. The Powertrain Of course, no features will allow for impressive towing capacity like a truck’s powertrain, and the Sierra HD has it going on in that department. The available 6.6-liter Duramax turbo-diesel V8 produces 445 horsepower and 910 lb-ft of torque. While these are the same numbers as previous models, this engine has been designed for higher efficiency in the 2020 Sierra 2500HD. For instance, there is a bigger radiator and fan for extra cooling capacity, as well as, enhanced air induction. One of the most impressive aspects of the powertrain is the new Allison 10-speed automatic transmission, which is being offered for the first time in this line up of HD pickups. With closer gear spacing than ever before, the engine is able to consistently run at the perfect level, no matter the towing load or terrain. This is also the first year that GMC is offering a 6.6-liter engine that runs on gasoline in their HD trucks. The 6.6-liter gasoline direct-injected V8 engine is exclusive to GMC, and it delivers 401 hp and 464 ft-lb of torque. This is an 11% and 22% increase in hp and torque, respectively, from the 6.0-liter gasoline engine of previous models. Customers who opt for the 6.6-liter gasoline V8 will get the 6L90 six-speed automatic transmission. Finally, the powertrain improvements for the 2020 Sierra 2500HD include bigger and stronger rear axles, which helps to provide maximum torque to the ground, as well as, better gross axle weight ratings (GAWR). The front axles are also bigger and stronger in general, and an 11.5-inch ring gear comes standard on all 2500HD models. Transparent Trailer View Along with more power to pull a trailer, the new Sierra HD features one of the most exciting new technologies in the industry today: transparent trailer view. GMC calls it the ProGrade Trailering System, and it essentially renders the trailer invisible behind the truck. This has obvious advantages for trailer haulers from experts to novices. By using various combinations of 15 cameras, the trailering system is designed to simplify every aspect of trailering. Seeing through the trailer allows for easier and safer maneuvering in traffic, backing up and parking. The system even offers a close-up of the hitch, making coupling a breeze. Furthermore, the ProGrade Trailering System includes: Lights for the hitch area Automatic parking brake assistance Integrated trailer brake controller A mobile app with a departure checklist, tire pressure monitoring, theft notifications and many other features Hauling Capabilities GMC also worked to improve the 2020 Sierra HD’s hauling capabilities and to make loading and unloading cargo as practical as possible for customers. For one, it now leads its class in cargo- bed volume and offers 12 corner tie-downs, and you have the option of adding a 120-volt power outlet in the bed. The cargo bed railings are an inch lower than the 2019 Sierra HD models, which lends to an easier liftover. Additionally, the truck has steps on the sides of the bed and on the corners of the rear bumper—roughly the size of a work boot—so that customers can have better access to objects inside the bed. Moreover, higher trim levels of the Sierra HD showcase the new MultiPro six-function tailgate that was introduced by GMC on the 1500 models this year; however, the version of the tailgate found on the 2500 is designed specifically for the HD models. THE EXTERIOR Now that you know the gist of the towing capabilities, let’s take a look at the exterior characteristics: Body Construction 2020 marks the beginning of a new era of body style for GMC pickups; overall, it’s larger and more aggressive than ever before. The contrast between the Sierra 1500 and 2500HD is more apparent than in previous years, as the latter now stands 2 inches taller and stretches 10 inches longer than its 2019 version. Additionally, the hood line is elevated, and the grill is an entirely different thing altogether. While GMC has received some criticism for the redesigned grill on the Sierra (as with the Chevrolet Silverado), there’s no question that it makes a statement: a bold, unapologetic statement with lots of chrome and character. The grill is massive, and it’s capped by a hood scoop that adds to the overall appeal of the truck. The hood scoop is also designed to assist the new cooling system that comes with the Duramax turbo-diesel engine. Another component that adds to the Sierra HD’s aggressive look is the LED lighting, which is everywhere. This includes headlights, taillights, roof marker lights and fog lights (available through upgrade). Moreover, the roof has four yellow running lights, and each wheel-well flare has an orange side marker at the top. Colors There are eight primary colors to choose from for the Sierra HD models: Summit White White Frost Tricoat Quicksilver Metallic Onyx Black Carbon Black Metallic Pacific Blue Metallic Dark Sky Metallic Red Quartz Tricoat THE INTERIOR There’s more to the 2020 Sierra HD than it’s attractive and functional exterior; it’s also built to impress on the inside: Roominess Driver and passenger comfort is a big part of the Sierra HD’s appeal. GMC has stepped up their game in creating more room in the cabin. In fact, the 2500 crew cab models are now top of the class for front head and legroom. Also, there are three more inches of legroom in the rear-seat than there were in previous models. If you’re one of the 90% of GMC customers who choose a crew cab body style, this extra room could prove critical in your riding experience—particularly on longer trips. Seats and Trim The cabin in the Sierra HD models is built on the same construction as the Silverado. However, that’s where the similarities end. As with many other specs, GMC puts their unique touch on their cabin features, and the new Sierra HD is no exception. For starters, the seating profile is higher than in recent years, which provides increased visibility on the road and, perhaps, a greater sense of safety. While the base model is satisfyingly upscale, the most elaborate interior comes in the Denali edition, which sports large pebbled grain leather upholstery with contrasting stitching, and no truck will have identical-looking seats. Also, the trim on the Sierra HD Denali comes in authentic open-pore wood with dark aluminum decor. Technology You’ve read about the ProGrade Trailering System, which is intelligently integrated into the Sierra 2500HD’s computers. But that’s not all the impressive technology the truck offers. There are 15 cameras in total, which come in handy even when you’re not hauling a trailer. For instance, you can see an overview of the truck, inspect the cargo in the bed, and see along the wheels as you parallel park. Additionally, a coinciding mobile app called MyGMC offers several functions that assist with pulling a trailer and keeping the trailer in good condition (e.g., controlling temperature, monitoring tire pressure, checking trailer lights, controlling the integrated brake system, etc.). Furthermore, you can opt for a 15-inch head-up screen that displays important functions such as an odometer, an inclinometer, trailer info, and navigation instructions, among others. And let’s not forget about the optional Rear Camera Mirror and HD Surround Vision camera system. THE TRIMS AND PRICING The 2020 Sierra 2500HD comes in five trim levels: The base model, SLE, SLT, AT4 and Denali. Prices for these trims, along with a plethora of configurations, differ as much as $30,000. Base Model, SLE, and SLT The base model Sierra 2500HD starts at $37,195 MSRP, which is the least expensive option we’ve seen for a GMC Heavy Duty truck in years. The Sierra 2500HD comes as a regular cab/long bed model, and it is basically GMC’s version of the Silverado Work Truck. The price goes up to $41,595 if you opt for a crew cab with standard bed, and you can add a long bed for $200. The SLE is one step above, meaning it has a few niceties not included in the base model. Starting at $41,595 (regular cab/long bed), you can get a crew cab with standard bed for $45,395. Again, adding a long bed to the crew cab model is just $200. The SLT is the Sierra 2500HD’s middle trim level, and it reflects both in price and features. It comes stocked with a double cab and standard bed for $52,195, and you can upgrade to a crew cab/standard bed for $53,995. AT4 This trim is all new to the GMC lineup of trucks. The AT4 was designed with off-roaders in mind. It comes with unique exterior and interior features (e.g., exclusive paint colors, dark chrome grill and trim, jet black upholstery, etc.), as well as some practical upgrades that make it worthy of its all-terrain title. For instance, the AT4 is stocked with an off-road suspension, locking rear differential and skid plates. It also comes with an off-road mode you can select for the traction control system. Furthermore, it boasts a hill start assist and hill descent control. The AT4 comes only in the crew cab model, which starts at $59,295; it’s $200 to add a long bed. Denali The Denali is the Sierra’s luxury trim, and has been since 2001. Along with some of the interior perks mentioned previously, the Denali comes with an enlarged chrome grill and 20-inch chrome wheels, among other features. Limited to crew cab form, it starts at $65,295, with the option of adding the $200 long bed. If you’re looking for muscle and appeal in a truck, don’t settle for anything less than the 2020 GMC Sierra 2500HD. It has towing and hauling capabilities to compete with any pickup in its class, and its innovative trailering technology is second to none. And let’s not forget its bold, attractive and functional exterior and interior. Be sure to come out to Liberty for a test drive, and find the trim level that works best for you!   -Alex Watson

XtraVue Trailer System

See Your Way to Safety with the XtraVue Trailer System – Liberty Buick GMC Trailering Solutions

If you’ve ever driven while hauling a trailer, you know the challenges that come with it. No matter how many years of experience you have, merging onto the highway, switching lanes, taking turns, backing up, and parking anywhere can be stressful and dangerous. Over time, a driver can get used to the weight of a trailer, and maneuvering around can become second nature. However, there’s always that one impediment that can conjure up anxiety: even the most seasoned trailer haulers don’t have eyes in the back of their heads. And even if they did, they can’t see past the massive trailer behind their truck. Until now. French automotive supplier Valeo recently premiered their XtraVue Trailer system at the 2019 Consumer Electronics Show. Later this summer, the groundbreaking technology is slated to debut on the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD models. It will show up on the vehicle features list as “Transparent Trailer View.” Here is some more information on the system: What is it? The XtraVue Trailer system is described by Valeo as technology that “allows the user of a trailer or a caravan to visualize the environment behind it.” Basically, it combines the video of your vehicle’s rearview camera with that of an additional camera on the rear of the trailer to form a single composite video that displays on a screen, which can easily be seen by the driver. According to demonstrations, this creates a seamless view of the environment surrounding the vehicle, including directly behind the trailer. In essence, it renders your trailer virtually invisible. How does it work? How the XtraVue Trailer system works is not unlike that of the “Stealth Sheet” being developed by the United States military, which is pretty much an invisibility cloak via nanotechnology. The primary difference between the two is that the XtraVue Trailer is not nearly as complex. Though the technology of the XtraVue Trailer is brilliant, it’s also straightforward and easy enough for the average driver to use comfortably. While early applications of the XtraVue Trailer system involved 15 cameras, the newest version that premiered in January has the science down to two cameras: one on the rear of the vehicle and one connected to the rear of the trailer. During the driving process, the XtraVue Trailer system combines these two feeds into a single video, removes extraneous content (i.e., the trailer), and fixes the background in the trailer’s place. This video is projected through a large screen that is mounted where the driver can safely view it. Safety Implications The selling point for the XtraVue Trailer system—and, indeed, what makes it such a distinguished product—is that it makes your trailer invisible. This means that it opens up visibility for the driver. Visibility equals safety for both the driver and the surrounding drivers. Anyone with towing experience will tell you that the larger the trailer is, the less you can see, which poses many dangers on the road. Maneuvers that are simple without a trailer (e.g., making turns, changing lanes, reversing toward other vehicles) become challenging with a huge box hanging behind you. Even with extended mirrors, your view cannot be fully trusted. In pre-XtraVue days, the safest method to execute maneuvers while towing a trailer was usually to have a partner help you. For instance, they could tell you when it’s clear to switch lanes or get out and spot you while you park. But what if you don’t have anyone with you when you’re driving? Also, relying on another person is not as effective as seeing the surroundings yourself. This is where the XtraVue Trailer system proves most valuable, and its technology can work with a trailer as long as 32 feet. A Work in Progress This is not Valeo’s first go at the XtraVue Trailer system. The 2018 release was met with mixed reviews; the technology was great but lacked the simplicity necessary to see production. For example, the original version required several video feeds from surrounding infrastructure, as well as, other vehicles on the road. With the new version, you only need the XtraVue Trailer equipment on your vehicle and trailer. While the product images show the system displaying on a separate screen, it can be expected that the XtraVue Trailer system will run through the infotainment screen in stock vehicles (such as the Sierra). The Valeo XtraVue Trailer system provides drivers with visibility, which makes the driving experience safer for everyone involved. This brilliant, refined technology is now becoming available to consumers everywhere. Keep your eyes peeled for updates on the XtraVue Trailer system, and be sure to come over to Liberty Buick GMC and check it out for yourself.

GMC Acadia Denali

The GMC Acadia Denali: Ranked Top of Its Class

Ranked as one of the top midsize sport utility vehicles (SUVs), the GMC Acadia stands out amongst the competition. With four different versions to choose from, there is something to suit everyone’s style and needs, from bachelors to soccer moms. Commonly discussed advantages of adding on Acadia to your garage come in terms of the vehicle’s specs. Aside from the user-friendly technology that can be found in the vehicle’s cozy luxury interior, the Acadia also offers above-average gas mileage for a vehicle of its class. All models of the Acadia manage between 17-21 miles per gallon in cities and about 26 mpg on the highway. For drivers looking to accommodate their families, friends, or a full carpool, the Acadia can be a great option. With the ability to add a third row of seats, the Acadia can hold up to seven passengers. And, unlike other midsize SUVs with optional third rows, having the additional seating does not eliminate space or storage within the Acadia. With the third row in place, there is still storage space in the rear of the vehicle that should hold your passenger’s items with ease. The third row can be retracted if additional storage space is needed in the back of the vehicle. If you are looking for a vehicle that can take you around the city and off road, then the Acadia might be right for you. Like other vehicles, it primarily relies on front-wheel drive capabilities, but when enabled by the driver, it can also utilize all-wheel drive. Having AWD capabilities can be extremely helpful if you find yourself going on adventures outside of the city. After all, you never know where you might find yourself when driving the new GMC Acadia. Each model of the Acadia has advanced features. With four different models to choose from, every driver has the opportunity to choose the perfect trim. The Acadia is offered in four model versions, including the SL, SLE, SLT, and Denali: The GMC Acadia SL costs around $29,000. It includes standard Acadia features, such as a rearview camera, infotainment system, touch screen, Bluetooth, a six-speaker audio system, satellite radio capability, USB ports, and more. This model of the Acadia does not offer the same V6 engine or all-wheel drive that the other models do, however, for someone looking for the bare minimum that the Acadia can offer, this model grants them a luxurious surplus. The GMC Acadia SLE model has two variations: the SLE-1 and the SLE-2. The SLE-1 costs about $32,800, while the SLE-2 costs around $35,200. For an additional cost, the SLE-1 variation of this model can be upgraded to all-wheel drive capability; however, it was originally only designed to utilize front-wheel drive. A V6 engine can be added to this variation for an additional cost. The SLE-2 is available with FWD and AWD capabilities with the engine of your choosing. The standard version of this model also comes with a power-lift gate, heated front seats, and an adjustable driver’s seat. Like the SLE model, the GMC Acadia SLT has two variations: the SLT-1 and the SLT-2. The SLT-1 is priced around $38,000 and the SLT-2 is close to $41,900. The SLT-1 features the standard adjustable seats, leather upholstery, a Bose audio system, a larger touch screen, and much more. You can also add the V6 engine and all-wheel drive to this variation for an additional cost. Unlike other models and variations, the SLT-2 is only offered with the V6 engine. It also comes standard with heated front- and second-row seats, parking sensors in the front and rear of the vehicle, collision alert, lane assistance, blind spot monitoring, and a low-speed automatic brake system. You could also choose to add all-wheel drive capabilities for an additional cost. Finally, the top-of-the-line Acadia model: the GMC Acadia Denali. Starting around $45,500, this model is the best that the Acadia can offer. It comes standard with a V6 engine, a navigation system, hands-free lift gate, a heated steering wheel, all-wheel drive capabilities, and tons more. The technology this model offers includes adaptive cruise control, automatic braking, and surround-view cameras. Unlike other popular midsize sport utility vehicles, the GMC Acadia offers a lot of tech features and a luxurious feel, while still being able to accommodate a full family. Despite being in such a competitive class of vehicles, the Acadia has managed to stand out amongst the competition.   What are you waiting for? Car Prices

Car Prices—How Much is Too Much?

Once you have found the car you want—you’ve run your credit, signed the paperwork, and climbed into the car to drive it off the lot. But as you’re leaving, you start worrying if you can afford what you just bought. You run the numbers in your head and a bit of panic shoots through you: “what if I have stretched my finances too far? What if I should have bought that car, not this one?” But, here’s the thing, you don’t have to fear the car-buying process. Making a few smart budgeting moves can make all the difference. According to a 2017 article in Business Insider, Warren Buffett—you know, the guy who is worth somewhere around 84.4 billion dollars—always buys his vehicles at a reduced rate. Actually, what he does is he finds one that has had some minor damage (hail, fender-bender, scrapes and dents, but never anything too serious), purchases it for a fraction of the true cost then has it repaired. He then drives said car until the wheels fall off or his daughter is too embarrassed to ride with him, whichever comes first. So why does a man who could buy every vehicle in America choose to hunt for bargains when he car shops? Because it’s worth it in the end. Within the sea of vehicles out there, and the fluctuating prices of those vehicles, major deals can be found. It just takes a little time and effort. Buffet’s Key Ideas Buy what you can afford. Think about wealth accumulation, not accumulating things and goods. Spending less money, overall, on things and sticking with the essentials in life—this is what Buffet would do. He’s owned the same house since 1958, and he’s never moved from it, despite being one of the world’s top billionaires. Eat cheaply. Warren Buffet’s breakfast consists of a morning trip to McDonald’s and he keeps his purchases below $5/day for breakfast. Maybe that choice isn’t good for his health, but his idea is good for his budget: you don’t need to splurge on food and you can be economical about the choices you’re making. The True Cost of a Car Though it’s true the value of a new car drops the moment it is driven off the lot, as long as you aren’t breaking the bank to buy it, it could still be worth the price, and the drop in price, just so long as you have done the research and you know you can afford the (true) cost of the vehicle. Here are a few hidden car costs that (non-savvy) buyers often fail to calculate: Financing Charges. Paying for a car in cash is usually your best option, but let’s be honest, how many people are actually able to do this—besides our friend, Warren Buffett? For those of us who do need to get a bit of financing, it’s important to note that throwing at least a little cash as a down payment can drastically reduce the monthly cost. It might also be a good idea to try and extend the loan and try and find the lowest interest rate. These are numbers and scenarios you will need to spend some time going through, and it could take time—which is why most car buyers don’t bother looking into the myriad was a car can be financed. Do your research and take your time, it will be worth it. Tax Credits. “Hybrids and electric cars seem great, but they cost so much!” We hear this all the time, and there is some truth to it—but there’s more to it than that. Yes, you will pay more initially for these types of vehicles, but you do save on gas and energy while you own the car. And that’s not all: you can also receive plenty of national, state, and local tax credits that can completely justify that hefty price tag. Buying these vehicles used can help drive the price down as well. Insurance Premiums. Car insurance, after the initial price of the car, is usually where you will spend the most money. The problem is companies charge different premiums depending on the type of car you buy. And it’s not just the make and model of car you get, these premiums are also based on the style—that is trim level, body style, etc. Usually, specialty vehicles (performance-oriented) have higher premiums, but it’s difficult to tell just how much you will be paying until you play around with the numbers and vehicle types. insure.com is a great website with a calculator that can help you crunch the numbers and find the best price for the car you want to purchase. Maintenance and Repair. Though cars these days are usually able to go longer than ever without having maintenance and repair, every car driver knows there will be a need to take the car in for work to be done, whether it’s minor or major repairs. Because of this, it’s important to spend time going over warranty options. Luckily, at Liberty, we will not only provide you with all your warranty options, we also have expert technicians who can do any maintenance and repair on site.

Liberty Buick GMC: ‘Tis the Season to Save Money on a New Car

The end of the year is an important time for savvy car buyers. Typically, this is when dealers are trying to get rid of the year’s stock to make way for the new models, often leading to deals that reduce car prices by hundreds, if not thousands. It is also a good time to buy because most dealerships are trying to set prices low enough to maximize the chances of meeting their annual sales goals. Don’t Wait to Buy that New Vehicle You have done your research and know which vehicle best suits your needs. You have spent time exploring prices and what you can best afford. Now imagine yourself walking into the car lot and eyeing that vehicle you have been wanting. The test drive is over and it is the end of the day. You may be tired and not in the mood to deal with a salesman, but you came with the intent of getting a good deal and you, the savvy consumer, are determined to make that happen.   Buying at the end of the year is propitious on a much larger scale because it is typically when dealers are most anxious to close a sale in order to meet or exceed the year’s quota. Go vehicle shopping the last two weeks in December and you will find yourself negotiating over a sale that must be made. These two weeks are the absolute best in timing, as new models will be arriving soon and the ones remaining must be sold to make room.   As with any significant purchase, research, patience, and mediation skills are necessary. And in a perfect vehicle-buying situation, you the customer, as well as the salesperson, are both benefiting from the process. Waiting until the end of the workday is good, holding out until the end of the month is better, but if you can withstand the temptation to buy until those last two weeks in December, you will be able to give yourself quite a nice post holiday gift and for the best possible price. What We Have to Offer Though this time of year is typically best for purchasing, there are no guarantees that you will save a lot of money. What mostly determines the amount of sale you will find is the make of the car itself. The plain and simple truth is this: some car manufacturers have better end-of-year deals than others, and it is your job — as the smart buyer — to find that make and model best for you and your pocket book. (Luckily, we have already done that work for you.)   Buick and GMC win for having some of the best deals in pricing this December. Not only are Buick and GMC doing a bang up job at re-introducing its line-up to the general public with innovative designs and superior performance, but they also know the importance of offering a great deal. For instance, this December you can finance varying models for as low as zero percent and get large cash-back rebates (be sure to check out other hidden dealer rebates too).   Here are some examples of what you can save this year at Liberty Buick GMC: NEW 2019 BUICK ENCLAVE FWD SALE PRICE: $41,757 MSRP: $48,180 new 2019 buick encore essence fwd SALE PRICE: $26,698 MSRP: $34,680 NEW 2019 BUICK ENVISION AWD 4DR PREMIUM II SALE PRICE: $37,778 MSRP: $48,030 NEW 2018 BUICK REGAL TOURX PREFERRED AWD SALE PRICE: $29,401 MSRP: $38,540 NEW 2019 BUICK CASCADA 2DR CONV PREMIUM SALE PRICE: $33,908 MSRP: $36,995 NEW 2019 GMC Sierra 2500 HD 4WD Denali SALE PRICE: $64,568 MSRP: $72,155 NEW 2018 GMC Canyon 4wd sle SALE PRICE: $32,000 MSRP: $38,575 NEW 2019 GMC Acadia awd denali SALE PRICE: $44,735 MSRP: $53,685 NEW 2019 GMC terrain fwd denali SALE PRICE: $35,060 MSRP: $43,410 NEW 2018 GMC yukon 4wd slt SALE PRICE: $56,655 MSRP: $68,685 In addition to our sales on new cars and trucks, you can also find great deals on our used car lot! Most people finance, a smaller percentage lease, and even fewer pay cash; but this is not indicative of which is best, as each option has its own set of advantages. Deciding on your method of purchase is highly dependent upon details such as how long you wish to own the vehicle, your current credit score, and how much cash you have in the bank. Regardless of your financial situation, each option should be scrutinized before making such a significant purchase. Paying cash: A positive to this method is a lack of worry over charges or finance fees; also, when using cash, you hold the title (rather than the bank), making for less hassle if you choose to sell the vehicle later down the road. And, first and foremost, you do not have to make monthly payments! A negative aspect to paying cash is that most often people don’t have such a large sum stowed away, and if they do, it may need to be set aside for another weighty buy — a house, college, nest egg…the list is never ending. Leasing: This option usually allows for a new model annually, and the vehicle is typically always under warranty, eliminating worry over engine or other performance problems. The monthly payments for leasing are often less than financing. Additionally, there are highly beneficial tax cuts when the leased vehicle is used primarily for business purposes. When leasing, you do not have to worry about making a down payment — assuming your credit is good enough. Negative aspects to leasing include a requirement of more than simply having basic insurance: often dealerships will require a specific amount or type of insurance, resulting in a higher monthly fee. Also, although a leased vehicle is covered with warranty, it is not covered for scratches and dents, which will have to be paid out of pocket. Financing: The most commonly used method of purchase for Americans, this option allows you to use the bank’s money, freeing up your disposable income and the time it can take to save enough money to pay cash. Credit scores determine the type of financing available (the higher the score, the lower the interest rate), and there are usually nice warranty packages out there for financers. The down side to financing? Your monthly payments are usually a little higher than when leasing, and there is usually a hefty down payment required. How to Shop For a Great Deal There are a few things to watch out for when car shopping this holiday season. In particular, if you are in need of an SUV and have been waiting for sale season to shop, here are just a few key tips to help you along in your shopping: In order to get the very best prices on SUVs this season, there are a few crucial steps that need to be taken. The first thing we suggest is if you have a trade-in vehicle, get it appraised first. A quick stop-in at CarMax, or even a detailed online search, can provide you with the exact amount your trade-in is worth. You can even stop in to our service department to see if it might be beneficial to have a little work done on your trade-in first. Sometimes this can bring up the value of the car. What sort of things will your service technician look for? Anything that is not performing properly. He or she will also look for things that could go wrong in the near future. Intricate pieces like engine belts, hoses, and plugs. These all need replacing every so often, and if you wait until they completely malfunction you could be left stranded. And even worse, they could cause damage to other parts of the engine. Don’t wait until something breaks. Let a professional look over your vehicle so that you can keep it running for years to come. This then becomes one less thing you have to worry about when shopping. Now you know the price to expect for your trade-in and you can perform a more realistic SUV search with a specific price in mind. Have an idea of the type of SUV you would like before you begin shopping. As with anything else, it’s a good idea to have a plan before you visit Liberty Buick GMC. Of course we can help you if you are unsure of what you would like, but the more you know coming in, the faster we can get you in your new ride! Even having a rough idea of your price range, make and model, as well as, color options can be a huge help when walking around on the lot. One of the most common hang-ups when buying a car is the paperwork. Having this in order before you purchase will keep you from the headache of trying to navigate through your documents at the last minute. Make sure you have your driver’s license, proof of auto insurance, payment method, and any paperwork you may have on your trade-in. Also, don’t forget to double-check the expiration dates on your insurance card. You would be amazed at how many times this is the culprit for causing frustration and a delay in driving away with a nice, new SUV. Lastly, if the process of buying takes a bit, don’t get frustrated. For a purchase such as this to take place properly, it often takes a little time. The most important thing is to be sure everything is done correctly so there are no unpleasant surprises later. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or get clarity on anything even a little confusing. Read the fine print, and make sure you are aware of all your sale bonuses, cash-back offers, and warranties. We want your experience to as pleasant as possible. We always welcome questions, so don’t be nervous about the process of buying a new car, whether it’s an SUV, sedan, or pickup we have you covered. GMC Sierra 1500

GMC Sierra 1500: the Light-Duty Truck that Serves as a Mobile Office

These days it seems the idea of what the modern truck is and should do is changing. What began as a vehicle designed primarily for the working individual, one meant mostly for hauling and towing, is now being used much differently. Sure, trucks still haul and tow, but in a time when vehicles are becoming more versatile, the modern truck has had to evolve. It’s much more than just transportation. Now, a truck is just as much a mobile office as it is anything else, and the way GMC sees it, in order to keep up with the times, the Sierra needed some reimagining. This next step in evolution for the GMC truck has created one of the most innovative and functional vehicles ever created, the GMC Sierra 1500. Since there is such variety in trucks currently, it can be difficult to decide which one is right for you. Should you focus on power, pull, strength, stamina? Full-size, medium-size, small? Then what about four-wheel-drive versus two-wheel? 8-cylinders versus 6? These questions are just the beginning! One way to be sure you have the right truck in mind is to think about how you will use it. Today, most truck buyers are finding themselves using their vehicle as a method of transporting bulk and trudging through mud, as well as, a mobile office. That’s right, we have become so busy that now we bring our offices with us wherever we go! This is why you need something that can easily perform all the typical duties of a truck, but one that also has a roomy and plush enough cabin that you can get your paperwork done on the job site, maybe even drive clients around. With this in consideration, which truck can go back and forth between the rugged and the professional on a whim, and do it with finesse? Let’s have a look at two top contenders: the GMC Sierra 1500 and the Chevy Silverado. Both trucks are selling better than ever because they do well at creating a luxurious and spacious interior, all the while maintaining a tough exterior. A Quick Comparison: the GMC Sierra 1500 Versus the Chevy Silverado Interior Comfort and Quality After sitting inside both trucks one thing becomes clear, while the Silverado is considered the more value-oriented truck, the Sierra 1500 is pristine. Not to imply the cabin to the Silverado is not nice, because it is. It’s just not as comfortable and sturdy. Inside the Sierra, there is thick leather seating, triple-sealed doors, and enough room to set up a computer, separate stacks of paper, even hold a meeting with a client! The expansive front seat is wide enough to hold three adult passengers comfortably, which allows enough room to spread out and even stretch quite a bit. Winner: GMC Sierra 1500 Cargo Space There are three bed sizes to both the Sierra and the Silverado, but the most common is the 8-foot bed. This size is perfect for setting up an exterior office on a nice, sunny day. If the 8-foot is too big, there is a 6-foot-6-inch bed that might be more accessible. In the Sierra, there is also the option for a regular cab, which has a 126.5-inch wheelbase. There is also an extended-cab and crew-cab version that sit on a 147.4-inch wheelbase. According to GMC, the longest of the two options offers almost 3 extra inches of legroom throughout. Sure, 3 inches might not sound like much, but once inside and settled, this 3 inches goes an awfully long way. Both beds are sturdy and move as one with the truck as it travels. The nice thing about luxury trucks is you don’t have to worry about the creaking and popping sounds we are used to hearing as we travel down the road and around corners. Both the Sierra 1500 and the Silverado do exceptionally well at offering roomy vehicles that can also carry work materials in the back without sounding like a box full of bolts while you drive. Winner: both the Sierra and the Silverado Interior Features The already-luxurious Sierra is available in the Denali trim, which sets it even more above the competition. Ventilated and heated leather seats, wireless device charging, navigation, Apple CarPlay, Andriod Auto, and the Bose premium stereo system can turn your Sierra into the nicest office you have ever had. Conversely, the Silverado has the High Country trim, which is Chevy’s attempt at luxury. This attempt does well with its 20-inch wheels, leather upholstery, heated steering wheel, and 8-inch touch screen, but, yet again, it does not hit the mark set by the Sierra. When it comes to quality interior features, the GMC’s light-duty truck just can’t be topped. Winner: GMC Sierra 1500 · Ride and Handling With features such as direct steering and Magnetic Ride Control, both the GMC Sierra and Chevy Silverado have incredibly smooth rides. As a matter of fact, both offer drive handling at an entirely new level. The attention paid to making these trucks drive like luxury sedans has paid off well. The ride and handling don’t only impress on the smooth, open road either. Once you drop off a perspective client or you finish-up all that paperwork, it’s a great idea to do a little off-roading. That’s right, get your new truck a little dirty, see what it can do out on the open trail. You will be impressed! Winner: both the Sierra and the Silverado Reliability Both trucks come with a three-year/36,000-mile basic warranty, plus a five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty. However, if you were to look at the J.D. Power Reliability Scores throughout the years on both trucks you would notice they are pretty close. But “pretty close” and “the same” create a big enough difference to sway truck drivers in one direction, towards the GMC Sierra 1500. Though both the GMC Sierra and the Chevy Silverado share close ties, as they are closely stacked, one does come out better than the other in the end. Sure, most of the features found in one can be found, in some similar degree, in the other, it’s the GMC Sierra that just does it better. With better comfort, content, storage, features, and reliability, the Sierra 1500 is the perfect work truck/mobile office. A Few More Reasons to Drive the Sierra 1500 The all-new GMC Sierra 1500 doesn’t just do well when stacked against its biggest competitor, it stands strong on its own as well. The time spent designing and detailing the Sierra is evident. A true sign a vehicle has been made with purpose and precision is not just seen in what is present, it also depends on what is absent. The new Sierra has taken the “less is more” approach in many aspects of its new design, and it has paid off tremendously. You will not find a bunch of extra buttons and components that tend to break and cost money. Everything in and on the Sierra 1500 has a purpose. The base level of the Sierra 1500 has a 4.3-liter, 6-cylinder engine with 285 horsepower and 305 pound-feet of torque. It can tow up to 7,600 pounds and reach a speed of 60 miles an hour in around eight seconds. Pretty impressive for a base-level engine, huh? But, if you find the need for a little more power, GMC still has you covered with the 1500. Sierra drivers can opt for the 5.3-liter, V-8 engine, which offers 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. And regardless of the engine size, all Sierra 1500s come with a tow/haul mode transmission and tap/shift controls. These controls make driving and distributing power much easier no matter the size of the load being carried. As noted earlier, comfort and handling are exceptional in the Sierra 1500. There is the option for rear- or four-wheel drive, and the front strut and rear leaf-spring suspension offers an extra smooth ride no matter how many wheels are pushing you along. But, to truly understand the effect of the leaf-spring suspension you need to take the 1500 for a drive, preferably on a rough road or rigid path. You will be amazed at how well the suspension takes any pothole or bump and translates it as smooth, easy driving. In addition to an undisturbed ride, 1500 drivers will enjoy the crisp steering that allows the Sierra to easily make its way around sharp corners and fit into tight spaces. Every aspect of the Sierra synthesizes together to create a powerful and luxurious driving experience. It’s not only the drive components providing a comfortable ride either. Inside the roomy cabin, the Sierra 1500 is filled with soft materials and pleasing aesthetics. The aluminum and wood trim pieces throughout the inside give of a sense of luxury, while the plush seats and polished dash create a comfortable, happy environment. The Sierra 1500 is surprisingly tough and pleasantly high-end. It offers superior comfort and power for being considered a light-duty truck. This is a perfect choice for the truck driver who needs something tough, but doesn’t quite need a machine to pull super heavy loads on a daily basis. Your New Office An added bonus to the GMC Sierra 1500 is its WiFi hotspot that makes connecting to the internet as easy as in your (actual) office. Combine this powerful connectivity with the comfort and quality of the all-new Sierra and it immediately becomes apparent this truck is simply unmatched. GMC has realized that comfort doesn’t only mean plush seating and soft-touch materials. True comfort is also created when there is more space to move and reposition. Comfort is when we can enjoy the interior of a truck with others. It’s almost as if GMC could see that the modern truck is moving towards the creation of a modern office: one that is completely mobile yet just as accessible as any other. Our Favorite Aspects of the Sierra At Liberty Buick GMC, we love the new Sierra. Its boxy frame is offset by subtle curves running the length of the long truck. The large, shiny grille seems to point from the sides to the crystal clear LED headlights. Plus, it comes in 11 different colors: White Frost Tricoat Deep Mahogany Metallic Cardinal Red Satin Steel Metallic Pacific Blue Metallic Quicksilver Metallic Summit White Onyx Black Dark Sky Metallic Red Quartz Tintcoat Smokey Quartz Metallic Inside the Sierra, we can’t get enough of the jet black materials, aluminum and wood accents throughout, and the perforated leather seats. To keep you and your loved ones cozy and safe there are integrated storage bins set throughout, a Multi-color 3-inch by 7-inch Head-Up Display, USB ports, and plenty more surprises to keep everyone happy. The choice is easy. If you need a truck, and you need a client transport/mobile office, the GMC Sierra 1500 is the absolute best option. Come in and see us today to test drive your new Sierra 1500.
