GMC went with a higher torque than Ford and this could be the reason for such a smooth, snappy ride. • Utility: Both the Acadia and the Explorer comfortably seat seven adults. This leaves plenty of room for everyone to feel like they aren’t shoved into a seat, elbow-to-elbow with another passenger. In the very back, the Explorer does have a slightly larger cargo area, which is nice when it comes time for traveling or grocery shopping. Getting Down to the Specifics Now that we’ve gone over some of the basic similarities, let’s get into the details. Here are a few of the important categories that make the Acadia and Explorer stand out: Engine As stated earlier, the Explorer comes with more power due to its 300.0-hp, 2.3-liter, 4 cylinder engine (gasoline fueled). The Denali Ultimate and AT4X are not the only Sierra models to boast an impressive interior. All models get a completely redesigned center console. Any Sierra with bucket seats receives a new electronic shifter and the SLE trim and above feature a 13.4-inch infotainment touchscreen and 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. Moreover, all trims are eligible for the novel Elevation Premium package, which gives you leather upholstery, bucket seats, and rear seats with added storage. Looking Under the Hood The engines belonging to the 2022 Sierra lineup are the same as in previous years. The base engine is a turbocharged 2.7-liter four-cylinder that produces 310 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque. This engine replaces last year’s base V6 engine and has 20 percent more torque. Next up with a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel inline-six engine that pushes 277 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. This diesel engine is compatible with the Max Trailering Package and can provide towing for up to 13,200 pounds. The most powerful option is the 5.3-liter V8 and 6.2-liter V8. The 5.3-liter is good for 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque, while the 6.2-liter yields 420 hp and 460 lb-ft. All the engines are paired with a 10-speed automatic except for the four-cylinder, which works with an eight-speed automatic. Rear-wheel drive comes standard while four-wheel drive is an option across trims. Snooping Into Safety The 2022 GMC Sierra makes all of the basic safety features standard across all models. The added size and length of the trailer are accounted for when the trailer is hitched up, thanks to the adaptive cruise control and blind-spot alert technologies. And this is just the beginning—there are a plethora of advanced driving assistance systems available for the new Sierra lineup! Taking In the Tech All Sierra 1500 trims get refreshed on the inside and outside in 2022, but when it comes to technology, the upgrades are reserved for the SLE and above. Coming standard is a 13.4-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital gauge display that can be configured to your liking. You can also choose to show trailering information, navigation, and other details in the driver’s gauge cluster. If you opt for the 15-inch head-up display, it will bring your cabin to a total of 40 diagonal inches of screen. The Sierra 1500 SLE and above trims also get Google built into their truck, and the Denali and AT4 trims come with three years of service. The Google system will work with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and it provides Google Assistant, Google Play, map functionality, and much more. By using Google Assistant in your pickup, you can operate navigation, music, many of the truck’s functions, and other features. A Peek at the Trims Hopefully, you have a pretty good idea of what you can expect from the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500. Let’s close by giving a quick run-through of the eight trims available: Denali Ultimate As the top-level trim, the Sierra Denali Ultimate comes standard with pretty much everything. You get the 6.2-liter V8 engine (but you can opt for the 3.0-liter Duramax turbo-diesel engine) and you get tons of safety tech like the Super Cruise driver-assistance system. The Denali Ultimate also comes with a unique Vader Chrome grille and signature 22-inch low-gloss black aluminum wheels with elaborate accents. Then there is the 12-speaker Bose Premium Series with a Centerpoint surround sound system, and even a Kicker MultiPro audio system in the truck bed! Denali You can also get the Duramax turbo-diesel engine or the 6.2-liter V8 on the Sierra Denali, though it comes standard with the 5.3-liter. Super Cruise and other safety technologies are optional on this trim, but most of the high-end infotainment and tech tools that GMC has to offer are standard. The Denali also comes with GMC’s premium suspension system, including a first-in-class continuous damping Adaptive Ride Control. AT4X The Sierra AT4X comes with the 6.2-liter V8 engine to go with front and rear electric-locking differentials; no other truck in the class offers this combination. This is also the model that will give you the first Multimatic DSSV spool-valve dampers, along with heated and ventilated power front seats that include 16 adjustments and massage functionality. AT4 The AT4 comes standard with the Duramax turbo-diesel, but you can opt for the 6.2-liter V8 engine if you want a little more power. This trim is lifted two inches higher off the ground and features a special off-road suspension and Rancho monotube shocks. The AT4 comes standard with 18-inch wheels and mud-terrain tires. SLT The Sierra SLT comes standard with a 5.3-liter V8 engine, and you can opt for the Duramax turbo-diesel or the 6.2-liter V8 engine. When it comes to trailering, the SLT provides the most assistance technologies in the class; this includes a trailering app that can be used from inside the truck. Front bucket seats come standard as well. Elevation The Sierra Elevation comes with a 2.7-liter turbocharged engine. You can get it with the 5.3-liter V8 or the Duramax turbo-diesel if you prefer. This trim comes with plenty of tech, and it offers the best front head and legroom of all crew cabs. SLE Also coming standard with a 2.7-liter turbocharged engine is the Sierra SLE. For any truck driver, towing capability is a huge deal. So when GMC mentioned the possibility of a Sierra 1500 with hands-free towing, we came to attention. Hands-free?! It’s true, 2022 will bring about GMC’s new, Super-Cruise truck of the future and we can’t wait to get our hands on…well, off of it. 2022 is going to be a big year for the Sierra 1500. Actually, every year is a big year in the arena of GMC trucks. These are the top-of-the-line, luxuriously designed vehicles that have proven themselves time after time, working their way to the top. Every year, the Sierra (in all of its iterations) competes with the Ford F-150, the Nissan Titan, the Chevy Silverado, and Toyota Tundra. But the Sierra does not get intimidated easily, and the new Super Cruise version of the 1500 is sure to take things to the next level in the world of pickup trucks. Though not all the details are out just yet, what we do know is the 2022 Sierra 1500 will now come with Super Cruise, the first hands-free driving experience that is compatible with main roads. This impressive new feature incorporates an innovative technology that allows for a much different driving experience. Just imagine changing lanes, parking, and even towing without even touching the steering wheel. It's a wild thought, and it's also a reality. How it Works It's pretty straightforward, really. When you are sitting in the new Sierra getting ready to tow a heavy load, the truck will alert you when it is ready to take over. The driver simply presses the Super Cruise button (conveniently placed on the steering wheel) and a green light appears, letting you know it's go time. At this point, the driver lets go of the wheel and the truck does the rest: rounds curves, drives straight, hits 70 miles-per-hour without hesitation, and it even has the internal intellect to estimate your trailer's weight (it does this through high-level calculations of throttle position compared to the speed of the truck, which allows it to adjust for distance and weight). The truck will also adjust to high winds pushing against the trailer by slowing down or adjusting its position so there is no sway as it drives. Another cool aspect of Super Cruise is that it can change lanes on demand by tapping the turn signal left or right. The truck will be able to sense whether it is safe or not to switch lanes, and once all is clear, it slowly and safely moves on over. But that's not all! You can also set the Super Cruise to change lanes on its own, without the prompting of the driver. Using sensors, the truck can tell how fast the vehicle is moving in front of you, and if you are moving faster than it, the truck will either slow down or change lanes—whichever is the safer option. This capability of thinking for itself is what we call Level 3 Autonomy, something new and incredibly awesome. The Always-Impressive Sierra 1500 The all-new GMC Sierra 1500 is pretty impressive with its innovative, self-driving features, but let’s be honest, the 1500 has been an impressive truck since its inception. The time spent designing and detailing the Sierra is evident. A true sign a vehicle has been made with purpose and precision is not just seen in what is present, it also depends on what is absent. The Sierra has taken the “less is more” approach in many aspects of its design, and this approach has paid off nicely. You will not find a bunch of extra buttons and components that tend to break and cost money. Everything in and on the Sierra 1500 has a purpose, whether it is to help you drive more safely or to drive on its own, there is no superfluous activity going on here. The base level of the Sierra 1500 has a 4.3-liter, 6-cylinder engine with 285 horsepower and 305 pound-feet of torque. It can tow up to 7,600 pounds and reach a speed of 60 miles an hour in around eight seconds. Pretty impressive for a base-level engine. If you find the need for a little more power, GMC still has you covered with the 1500. Sierra drivers can opt for the 5.3-liter, V-8 engine, which offers 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. And regardless of the engine size, all Sierra 1500s come with a tow/haul mode transmission and tap/shift controls. These controls make driving and distributing power much easier no matter the size of the load being carried. Comfort and handling are exceptional in the Sierra 1500. There is the option for rear- or four-wheel drive, and the front strut and rear leaf-spring suspension offers an extra smooth ride no matter how many wheels are pushing you along. But, to truly understand the effect of the leaf-spring suspension you need to take the 1500 for a drive, preferably on a rough road or rigid path. You will be amazed at how well the suspension takes any pothole or bump and translates it as smooth, easy driving. Though there has been a delay in the rollout of the all-new GMC Terrain crossovers, production on the 2022 models is currently underway. You can expect big upgrades and a brand new feature: All-Wheel-Drive. FWD to AWD is a big deal in the crossover/SUV world, one that solidifies the Terrain as more of a luxury ride than a middle-of-the-road vehicle. With new features and even better performance, 2022 might just be the year of the Terrain. As modern crossovers and SUVs evolve, we are seeing a move from rugged mudslingers, towards tough luxury drivers. This push for comfort and aesthetic, while still maintaining that tough SUV persona, has driven the production of the GMC Terrain, slowly morphing it into a stoic family vehicle that can hold its own. Adding all-wheel-drive to the Terrain is an important move for GMC because it further defines the venerated crossover as a step above. AWD offers more power than front-wheel-drive, but it doesn’t guzzle as much gas as four-wheel-drive. It’s a great in-between that still gives enough power for off-roading capabilities and can handle rough weather situations. The only downside to the new Terrain is the fact that it was delayed due to the pandemic. There was meant to be a facelift and refresh for the Terrain in 2021, but that’s all history. In fact, the biggest issue had with crossovers/SUVs of today is deciding which one fits your lifestyle and family size best. And by “one” we mean which trim level of Terrain because there are tons of options to choose from. 2022 will bring a full update to the GMC Terrain, the first biggest upgrade in a while. The new exterior has been made to look tougher than ever with sharp, bold features in shape—squared front and rear-ends, C-shaped corners, and optional LED running lights in the front bumper. Inside the Terrain is cozy and comfortable. The center dash is compressed to house the audio and climate controls. Everything is easily accessible due to plenty of shelves and cubbies for holding cell phones and snacks.
