General Motors has made no secret about its plans for electric vehicles in the future. For several years, the auto manufacturer has released EV concepts and information for its four primary brands: GMC, Buick, Chevrolet, and Cadillac. Those plans have only strengthened in recent months. GM seems more convinced than ever that the future of the auto industry lies in all-electric vehicles that not only will benefit the environment but will ultimately cost less to drive. Part of the plan is to release 30 new EVs by the 2025 model year. Below, we’ll look at GM’s strategy. GMC and Buick’s upcoming EVs. 30 EVs by 2025 If there were any doubts about GM’s commitment to fighting climate change and raising the bar for the rest of the auto industry, those doubts were laid to rest in recent months. We now know that GM has big plans for electrification and is working hard to execute the plans within a relatively quick timeframe. Before the COVID-19 pandemic hit, GM announced that it would invest $20 billion in electric and autonomous vehicles through 2025. That number has now changed to $27 billion. Not too long ago, the automaker had also said that it would be launching 20 new EVs by 2023, most of which would only be available for the China market, where there is a higher demand for EVs. However, GM recently announced a change of plans: It will release 30 EVs by 2025, and North Americans will have access to more than two-thirds of them. The GMC, Buick, Chevrolet, and Cadillac brands will all offer EVs. For GM, these plans stem from an overarching goal of becoming carbon-neutral by 2040. To accomplish this goal, the manufacturer will seek to cease production of all gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles by 2035. GM also hopes to power all of its U.S. facilities with 100% renewable energy by 2030, along with its international facilities by 2035. Upcoming Buick/GMC EVs While there are many GM electric vehicles on the horizon, let’s take a quick look at some of the upcoming EVs from the GMC and Buick brands: GMC For decades, the Hummer models were known as being mean, gas-guzzling machines. After being discontinued in 2010, GM is resurrecting Hummer as a GMC sub-brand for the 2022 model year. We’ll see two forms of the all-new Hummer: a pickup truck (SUT) in 2022 and an SUV in 2023. Both models will be all-electric. And both models will be meaner than ever. Here’s what we know so far about the Hummer EV SUT: It will offer up to 1,000 horsepower. The powertrain will include up to three electric motors. The truck will go about 350 miles on a charge. It will get you to 60 mph in just three seconds. It appears that the Hummer EV SUT will be a dream for off-road enthusiasts. It will showcase the “Crab Walk” mode, a four-wheel-drive feature that allows you to drive diagonally. Drivers will also have the option of an adjustable air suspension and removable roof panels. The 2022 GMC Hummer EV SUT is set for release in late 2021. Buick According to public knowledge, there are at least two Buick electric vehicles in the works (though several other concepts are circulating). The Buick brand is making significant strides in China, where demand for EVs is much higher due to stricter emission standards. As of now, it’s unclear whether Buick will release EVs in North America within the next couple of years or whether the EVs will debut in the China market and make their way to the States shortly after that. We do know that GM has unveiled the development of two electric SUVs. According to the automaker, one model will provide “more conventional crossover proportions.” Expect this SUV to be geared toward families with an emphasis on interior space and cargo. The other Buick all-electric SUV is being developed with “a greater emphasis on form and athletic fashion.” Along with more expressive proportions, this SUV is likely to cater more to single people and couples. Conclusion The future is electric. And no auto manufacturer is capitalizing on this prediction more than GM. By confidently setting ambitious goals for an all-electric lineup and carbon-neutral facilities, and by already taking actionable steps toward these goals, GM firmly establishes its place in the industry as a visionary automaker. Thus, it started developing hot new SUVs and crossovers to meet market demand and positioned itself as the best new thing. Much of the success of Buick’s transformation can be attributed to marketing tactics. By now, you’ve probably heard the “That’s a Buick?!” catchphrase many times. Current and Future Outlook In recent years, it seems that GM has succeeded in redefining the Buick brand. More and more young professionals are switching to Buick SUVs and crossovers. What’s more, almost half of all new Buick converts express brand loyalty by trading in their used Buicks for newer models, and dealers have reported a rising trend of people trading in Infiniti, Lexus, and other luxury models for Buick’s latest models. The future looks bright for Buick. The manufacturer continues to produce safe, reliable, comfortable, and attractive models that pack all the performance and technology you could ask for in a vehicle. For the model year 2020, Buick has released the all-new Encore GX—a crossover that is set to add even more depth to an already-loaded compact SUV segment. Unlike what the name would suggest, the Buick Encore GX is not a trim level of the Encore. The Encore and Encore GX are two separate models with their own sets of trim levels. Sure, there are some similarities between the two, but there are also some significant differences that should be considered if you are trying to determine which SUV is right for you. All Encore trims come with a 1.4-liter DOHC turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 138 horsepower and 148 lb-ft of torque. This engine is matched with a six-speed transmission, and it provides plenty of power for a compact SUV. You technically own the car, and you can make any modifications to it that you wish. Once the principal is paid down and your equity is built, you own the car free and clear—meaning your debt to the lender is fulfilled. When you lease a car, you basically pay the value that the car depreciates, which means your monthly payments are cheaper. However, you never own the car unless you agree to buy it at the end of the lease, which means there are restrictions and potential fees associated with driving the car. Leasing is becoming increasingly popular among Americans, and in 2018, about 30% of consumers opted to lease a car rather than buy one. Just like renting or purchasing a home, there are advantages and disadvantages either way you go. LEASING—PROS AND CONS So, let’s start with the pros and cons involved with leasing a vehicle: Pros of Leasing When it comes to upfront costs, leasing a car is significantly less expensive. Moreover, there may be tax benefits to leasing a car, particularly if you are self-employed or you own a business. Cons of Leasing You may see now why leasing is appealing to so many people. However, there are plenty of disadvantages that come with it as well. In the long run, you will probably end up paying more if you lease a car instead of buying one. This is mainly because vehicles depreciate at such a fast rate. Therefore, if you keep leasing car after car, your monthly payments never end and you never own a car. There are also restrictions and potential fees to consider when leasing. For example, lease contracts limit the number of miles you can put on the vehicle. Sure, you can go over that limit, but you will pay anywhere between 10 cents and 50 cents for every extra mile. And if you drive under your mileage limit, those miles don’t roll over. Furthermore, you can’t really make any modifications to a vehicle you lease. Some dealers will agree to professional window tinting and maybe a few other exceptions. For the most part, however, you’re expected to return the vehicle stock. Technically, you can make modifications as long as you undo them before bringing the vehicle back. But if you decide to remove that emblem or badge, and it leaves a blemish when you put it back on, you could face some hefty fees. Modifications aside, you have to return the vehicle in good condition. If the vehicle has excessive dings and scratches—anything beyond normal wear and tear—you can expect to pay additional fees. And those who decide to terminate their lease before the contract ends will face significant charges. The Bottom Line Leasing a car is cheaper up front, which means you can drive a more expensive car than you could otherwise afford. Also, leasing often comes with free maintenance, and it’s a fairly straightforward process—you use the car and bring it back, without having to worry about selling it. However, leasing costs more money long-term, and there are a lot of restrictions and fees to consider. BUYING — PROS AND CONS By now you probably have a decent idea of some of the pros and cons involved with buying a car, but let’s expand on them a little bit: Pros of Buying Over time, buying a car is a better investment because you’re paying to own the car. The longer you drive a vehicle after it’s paid off, the more value you get out of it. So, in the grand scheme of things, the least expensive way to drive a vehicle is to buy one and drive it until it quits. Also, when you buy a vehicle, there are no additional fees or penalties to worry about. You can make modifications to the vehicle, and you can drive it as much as you want. Plus, you always have the option of selling the car, or you can even trade it in to lower the price of your next car. Cons of Buying Though you’re working toward owning a car outright when you purchase it, you still have steeper monthly payments, since you’re paying both principal and interest. And in order to avoid owing more than the vehicle is worth (going upside down in the loan), your down payment will usually be significantly higher. Plus, a manufacturer warranty typically lasts about three years, and you are responsible for all repair and maintenance costs after that. Additionally, the flexibility to trade-in or sell your vehicle whenever you want is nice. However, neither of these is an easy task. Each is often a long, drawn-out process that can be stressful if not overwhelming. The Bottom Line If you’re focused on the long-term, buying a car is your best option. A lot of dealerships have targets and bonuses for making a certain number of sales by the end of each month and year. So, if you walk into a dealership at the end of the month, there’s a good chance that someone will lower the price to sell a lease in order to hit their target for the month. Your chances are even better if you go in for a lease as the year is coming to a close, because more employees are likely to be scrambling to hit a milestone so they can receive their year-end bonuses. Another common time of year to get good deals is during model changes. Manufacturers often release their new models in late summer or early fall, and if you’re fine with driving last year’s model, you may be able to get a great lease deal when the newer models hit the market. This is primarily because dealerships are eager to make room for the new models, meaning they are more likely to offer lease incentives on the older ones. Then there are the holiday sales, which you’ve probably seen advertised on TV. Particularly around Christmas, Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day, you can often score some deep discounts on a lease. However, be sure to look at the fine print, because these promotions often come with stipulations. Finally, you can also get lucky if a dealership is experiencing slow business or is having trouble selling a specific model. In sum, try to shop for a lease at the end of the month or year, during a holiday promotion, or when business appears to be slow. IF YOU DECIDE TO LEASE If leasing sounds like the right thing for your situation, make sure you understand how it works before you walk into the dealership. To gauge your probability of being approved for a lease, check your credit score with one of three major credit bureaus (Experian, TransUnion, Equifax). If you want to be extra thorough, get a report from all three, and make sure any inconsistencies are sorted out. Some leasing companies will only approve customers with a 700 or higher. Even if you get approved with a lower credit score, however, your interest rates are likely to be higher. Also, go through your budget to determine how much you can afford for monthly payments. Generally speaking, you never want your lease payment to exceed 15% of your monthly net pay. And you will also need to factor in costs like insurance and gas. IF YOU DECIDE TO BUY As with leasing a car, you will need to determine your budget before buying a car. Follow the 15% rule for your car loan, and be sure to consider additional costs like insurance, gas, sales tax, vehicle registration, routine maintenance, and unexpected repairs. Determine a number for how much you can spend on a vehicle, and consider purchasing one that’s a little less expensive than that number. Unless you know the exact model you want, research different vehicles to find a few that could meet your needs. Along with learning more information about models you’re interested in, you can look at MSRPs and see how much they’re going for at different dealerships. That way, you can estimate a fair price and set your limit on what you’re willing to spend when you’re negotiating with dealers. Once you’ve done your research, call a dealership to set up a test drive. Research is important, but actually getting behind the wheel is often what convinces a buyer whether that particular vehicle is the one or not. After a test drive, you’ll be ready to talk prices, start the trade-in/sale process of your current vehicle, close the deal, and drive off in your new ride! Leasing and buying a vehicle both have their pros and cons. If cheaper monthly payments and driving a new car every few years is the most important thing to you, then leasing is probably your best option. If you care more about making a long-term investment and having no monthly payments one day, then you’re likely better off to purchase a vehicle. We especially love the forward automatic braking, for obvious safety reasons, as well as the adaptive cruise control which, as the name says, adapts to your driving style and needs. Pricing The MSRP starts at about $57,155 but Liberty Buick GMC has some great deals on the Enclave with Avenir trim, starting at $46,781 and topping out at $47,413. Those prices include purchase allowance, select market bonus cash, and could include GM Loyalty Purchase Cash (if you qualify). You will not find a lower price anywhere but at Liberty Buick GMC. The Regal Buick’s Regal Sportback also got the upgraded, exclusive Avenir trim treatment. The four-door Sportback, with front-wheel drive, is the only Regal that will get the Avenir trim level. Its powertrain sports a 2.0-liter turbocharged, four-cylinder engine that has the heft of 250 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, running a nine-speed automatic transmission. That’s some power! The three-dimensional grille, with mesh look on the upper grille, sets off the signature Avenir look. The Regal, too, has those beautiful 19-inch wheels in a Pearl Nickel finish. Trimmed out with LED headlights and cornering lamps, the Regal Avenir has a finished, smooth look to its exterior. Also, the driver’s side-mirror features an auto-dimming mechanism. The best and latest of Buick’s technological features figure prominently in the interior. With an eight-inch infotainment system, you have access to navigation, and cloud connectivity (for software updates). The Regal offers a wireless charging pad for smart devices, as well as, eight-speaker Bose stereo system, giving you only the best sound for all of your cruising tunes. And, if you have more than one Buick Avenir vehicle, you can sync your preferences across the models, to create a seamless driving experience in any car you drive. With Whisper Beige leather and Ebony accents as the signature look to the cabin, you won’t be confused at all—you will know this is a luxury sedan you are in! Outside, you are looking at upper and lower grilles that have an exclusive mesh look. This spruces up the feel of the LaCrosse quite a bit. It sits on 19-inch Pearl Nickel alloy wheels, but you can take those up a notch to the larger 20-inch that comes in a Midnight Silver finish. Inside the LaCrosse Avenir’s posh cabin means casting your gaze on the Chestnut look exclusive only to the Avenir line. The wood trimming and accents, including on the steering wheel, give the LaCrosse a refined look. Want Ebony trimming in the interior, instead of Chestnut? Buick gives you that option, too. And the embroidered headrests say “luxury” in this upgraded sedan’s cabin. And Buick sets a flourish on the headrests of the front row, with the Avenir logo, and adorns the same logo on the sill plates. This is no standard LaCrosse. The LaCrosse Avenir will come with available all-wheel drive, the Dynamic Drive Package, and loads of safety features. Why not? We think the best way to think about the Avenir is to come out and have a look at what it’s got going on. Test-drive it to get the whole Avenir experience. Jump into the cabin and feel the leather, see the intricate details (the piping, the contrasting hand-stitching) and run your hands along the wood details that make the Buick Avenir better than the others. The Avenir line offers an excellent experience: comfort, smoothness, and sleek design add up to a luxurious experience that is not to be missed. However, there’s always that one impediment that can conjure up anxiety: even the most seasoned trailer haulers don’t have eyes in the back of their heads. And even if they did, they can’t see past the massive trailer behind their truck. Until now. French automotive supplier Valeo recently premiered their XtraVue Trailer system at the 2019 Consumer Electronics Show. Later this summer, the groundbreaking technology is slated to debut on the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD models. It will show up on the vehicle features list as “Transparent Trailer View.” Here is some more information on the system: What is it? The XtraVue Trailer system is described by Valeo as technology that “allows the user of a trailer or a caravan to visualize the environment behind it.” Basically, it combines the video of your vehicle’s rearview camera with that of an additional camera on the rear of the trailer to form a single composite video that displays on a screen, which can easily be seen by the driver. According to demonstrations, this creates a seamless view of the environment surrounding the vehicle, including directly behind the trailer. In essence, it renders your trailer virtually invisible. How does it work? How the XtraVue Trailer system works is not unlike that of the “Stealth Sheet” being developed by the United States military, which is pretty much an invisibility cloak via nanotechnology. The primary difference between the two is that the XtraVue Trailer is not nearly as complex. Though the technology of the XtraVue Trailer is brilliant, it’s also straightforward and easy enough for the average driver to use comfortably. While early applications of the XtraVue Trailer system involved 15 cameras, the newest version that premiered in January has the science down to two cameras: one on the rear of the vehicle and one connected to the rear of the trailer. During the driving process, the XtraVue Trailer system combines these two feeds into a single video, removes extraneous content (i.e., the trailer), and fixes the background in the trailer’s place. This video is projected through a large screen that is mounted where the driver can safely view it. Safety Implications The selling point for the XtraVue Trailer system—and, indeed, what makes it such a distinguished product—is that it makes your trailer invisible. This means that it opens up visibility for the driver. Visibility equals safety for both the driver and the surrounding drivers. Anyone with towing experience will tell you that the larger the trailer is, the less you can see, which poses many dangers on the road. Maneuvers that are simple without a trailer (e.g., making turns, changing lanes, reversing toward other vehicles) become challenging with a huge box hanging behind you. Even with extended mirrors, your view cannot be fully trusted. In pre-XtraVue days, the safest method to execute maneuvers while towing a trailer was usually to have a partner help you. For instance, they could tell you when it’s clear to switch lanes or get out and spot you while you park. But what if you don’t have anyone with you when you’re driving? Also, relying on another person is not as effective as seeing the surroundings yourself. This is where the XtraVue Trailer system proves most valuable, and its technology can work with a trailer as long as 32 feet. A Work in Progress This is not Valeo’s first go at the XtraVue Trailer system. The 2018 release was met with mixed reviews; the technology was great but lacked the simplicity necessary to see production. For example, the original version required several video feeds from surrounding infrastructure, as well as, other vehicles on the road. With the new version, you only need the XtraVue Trailer equipment on your vehicle and trailer. While the product images show the system displaying on a separate screen, it can be expected that the XtraVue Trailer system will run through the infotainment screen in stock vehicles (such as the Sierra). The Valeo XtraVue Trailer system provides drivers with visibility, which makes the driving experience safer for everyone involved.
